Psychiatric Evaluation & Diagnosis

A full picture first. Nothing is prescribed before it is understood.

The first full appointment is an unhurried conversation about your history, your symptoms, your physical health, your sleep, and everything you have already tried. Getting the diagnosis right matters more than getting to it quickly, because the wrong one sends the next two years in the wrong direction. You will leave understanding how I see it and what I am recommending, in plain language.

  • Full psychiatric and medical history
  • Review of past medications and what happened on them
  • A clear explanation of the working diagnosis
  • A treatment plan you have actually agreed to

Medication Management

Prescribing by someone who knows how your week went.

Medication is a tool, not a verdict. When it is the right tool I will say so, and when it is not I will say that too. Because I am also the person doing your therapy, dose changes are made by someone who heard what the last month was actually like rather than reading a short summary. Side effects get taken seriously; a medication you cannot tolerate is not a medication that works.

  • Starting, adjusting and tapering medication
  • Second opinions on an existing regimen
  • Honest discussion of side effects and trade-offs
  • Coordination with your other physicians when needed

Individual Psychotherapy

Real therapy, with your psychiatrist, in the same hour.

This is the part most psychiatrists have stopped offering. I am trained across cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic work, interpersonal therapy, mindfulness-based approaches, solution-focused brief therapy and trauma-focused therapy, and I draw on what fits you rather than running everyone through the same protocol. Some people come for therapy alone. That is a complete course of treatment, not a lesser one.

  • Cognitive behavioral (CBT) and mindfulness-based (MBCT)
  • Psychodynamic and interpersonal therapy
  • Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT)
  • Trauma-focused therapy

Reproductive & Perinatal Psychiatry

The years when hormones, sleep and identity all move at once.

Trying to conceive. Pregnancy. The postpartum months. Perimenopause. These are stretches when mood and anxiety behave differently, and too much of what happens gets waved off as normal for the stage of life. Some of it is not, and much of it is treatable. Medication decisions in these years carry real questions about pregnancy and nursing, and they deserve a psychiatrist who knows the current safety data and will walk you through the trade-offs rather than around them.

  • Anxiety and depression during pregnancy
  • Postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety
  • Perimenopausal mood and sleep changes
  • Medication safety in pregnancy and while nursing

Telepsychiatry

The whole practice, online, anywhere in New Jersey or New York.

Every appointment happens by phone or secure HIPAA-compliant video. There is no waiting room and no drive. For most people this is what makes care possible to keep going when work, childcare or a hard week would otherwise end it. You need somewhere private to sit and a connection you trust. You also need to be physically located in New Jersey or New York at the time of the appointment, which is a licensing rule rather than a preference.

  • Secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform
  • Phone appointments when video will not work
  • Appointments Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9am–5pm
  • Available anywhere in NJ and NY

Couples & Relationship Work

For when the difficulty lives between two people, not inside one.

Some things are not a single person’s problem to solve alone. I work with couples as well as individuals, drawing on family and marital therapy alongside interpersonal work. This is useful when one partner is unwell and both are carrying it, when a diagnosis has changed how a relationship runs, or when the pattern between two people has become the thing that needs attention.

  • Couples sessions, online
  • Family and marital therapy approaches
  • Support when one partner has a psychiatric diagnosis
  • Communication and conflict patterns

If any of this is happening right now

Some of what is listed above can become urgent. This practice does not provide emergency or crisis care, and a booking request is not the right channel for it. If you are in danger, or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), text HOME to 741741, or call 911. They are free and staffed around the clock.

How she works

Evidence first, then the person in front of her.

Dr. Ibeh practices evidence-based medicine and keeps current with the psychiatric literature, because the standard of ten years ago is not automatically right for you today. Where the evidence is strong she will tell you. Where it is thin she will tell you that too, before recommending anything.

What the research cannot tell her is what your life is like. That comes from the sessions. Holding both the therapy and the prescribing means the clinical decisions get made with the full picture rather than a summary, and the plan can change quickly when something is not working.

Who she works with

Adults, individually and as couples.

  • Adults. The practice does not see children or adolescents.
  • Individuals and couples.
  • LGBTQ+ affirming. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and non-binary patients are welcome and seen as themselves.
  • Anyone physically located in New Jersey or New York at the time of their appointment.

Investment & insurance

Straight answers about money.

This practice is out-of-network. You pay the practice directly rather than going through an insurance panel. In exchange, appointments are as long as they need to be and the clinical decisions are made between you and your doctor, without a third party deciding what is covered this quarter.

Most plans include out-of-network benefits. The practice provides superbills and can submit reimbursement claims to your insurer, so you can use them. What comes back to you varies by plan, and your insurer is the only one who can tell you the number. It is worth calling them and asking what your out-of-network outpatient mental health benefit is, and whether your deductible has been met.

Questions

Before you book.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book the free 15-minute consultation yourself. If a doctor or therapist referred you, bring their name and any records you have. Dr. Ibeh asks your written permission before she contacts anyone. Most people arrive on their own, having read a little and decided to make one call.

Can I come for therapy only, or medication only?

Either works. Some people come for medication management and keep the therapist they already trust. Others want therapy with a psychiatrist who can prescribe later if that turns out to be useful. You do not have to decide before the first appointment. The evaluation is where the two of you work out which fits.

How long before I notice a difference?

That depends on the diagnosis and the treatment. Antidepressants often take four to six weeks to show their full effect, and Dr. Ibeh will tell you what to expect from your own medication when she prescribes it. Therapy tends to build more gradually. She will not give you a timeline she cannot stand behind.

Can you work with my therapist or my primary care doctor?

Yes, and it often helps. With your written consent she will speak to your therapist, your obstetrician or your primary care doctor, so everyone is working from the same plan. Nothing is shared without your permission. If you would rather keep this part of your care separate, that is a fine choice too.

Do you see children or teenagers?

No. The practice is adults only, individually and as couples. If you are looking for care for a child or adolescent, Psychology Today’s directory lets you filter for child and adolescent psychiatrists in New Jersey and New York, and your pediatrician is usually the fastest route to a referral.

Not sure which of these you need?

That is what the first call is for. Fifteen minutes, no cost, and you will leave it knowing what the next step would look like.
